Marmaris

(l`antica Phiscos)

Marmaris, formerly known as Physkos, belonged to the Carian Empire in the 6th century B.C. The Carians originally came from Crete, settled in the province of Mugla and took over Physkos with its natural harbor. Everything was peaceful until after 300 B.C. when various powers like Egyptians, Assyrians, Ionians and Dorians successively took over Physkos. The Dorians finally colonized the Carian province.

In 138 B.C. Physkos was surrendered to Rome by King Attalo and in 1425 the city became Ottoman. It was during the Ottoman rule that Sultan Suleyman changed the name from Physkos to Marmaris. It was under his instruction that the famous castle of Marmaris was built in 1521 (alternatively, it was built in 3000 B.C. and was rebuilt by him). This castle has now been converted into a museum.

If you love ancient charm and the magical serenity of nature Marmaris is just the right place for you. All you have to do is drive out of the town a little, and nature with all its vintage charm will embrace you from all sides.

Marmaris promises many activities for those who love to hunt shops and for those who are in to nightlife.

Along the peninsula lie humble villages, tourist marinas and secluded beaches that still hold the enchantment of the ancient civilization. The lovely resort of Icmeler lies in the outskirts of Marmaris and the stretch between Icmeler and Degirmenyani is aesthetically magnificent. If you are on a yachting trail then two popular stops are Gokova and the village of Turunc. The latter is known for handcrafted honey, saga tea and Garden Thyme. Some other beautiful spots are SilimanBeach, Kizkumu beach and the waterfall near the Turgut village.

Fish is extremely fresh in Marmaris and Kalkan (Turbot),

Luifar (Blue fish),

Barbunya (Gray mallet) are some of the popular choices.

Few of the lunch and dinner time specials of Marmaris are Doner Kebab, Pilic Sis, Iman Bayildi, etc. As far as dessert

is concerned, the popular choices are Balkava, Bulbul Yuvasi and Sutlac and finally you can round off the dinner with Turkish coffee

Among the drinks, Raki is the most popular one in Turkey. Apart from that

beers and wines are also produced. Those who prefer soft drinks can have fresh fruit

juices or Ayran (yogurt mixed with water).

Being adorned with beautiful serene bays, acres of lush green forest and series of hills, Marmaris is one of the best and biggest holiday resorts of Turkey. Marmaris is located in the Mugla province, which lies in the southwest of Turkey. The city is one of the best choices, if you are planning to unwind and relax during this summer vacation.
